"The Priority of Relationships" Philippians 4:21-23 Big Idea: In times of uncertainty, right relationships aren't just important, they're essential. I. Relationship with One Another (vv. 21-22) A) Paul's closing words here are not just a routine doxology, but carefully crafted to further emphasize unity and empathy in the church. Throughout his letters, Paul stresses the importance of right doctrine, right behavior, and the like in the church. But here we see him also prioritize the need for right relationships (cf. Phil. 4:2) B) We see the emphasis in right relationships in: 1. Equality in the church (vv. 21-22) 2. Christ-like behavior (cf. Col. 3:12-17) 3. The priority of love (cf. Col. 3:14) C) Scripture clearly reveals that relationships in the church aren't just important, they're essential. As a church, among God's people, we worship Him together, grow together in our faith, and together are transformed into the image of Christ. II. Relationship with God (v. 23; cf. Mk. 12:28-31) A) It goes without saying that right relationship with one another starts with right relationship with God. When asked, Jesus didn't say the most important thing was a methodology or philosophy, but a love for God and for others (cf. Mk. 12:28-31). If we want to know the right thing to do in any situation, it starts with loving God above all else. B) Building right relationships starts with: 1. Loving God as a priority (cf. Rev. 2:1-5) 2. Resting in God's grace (v. 23) 3. Emphasizing prayer C) In all times, but especially in uncertain ones, the best thing we can do for ourselves and for others is to love God with all our being. It is the nurturing of our relationship with God and with others that will get us through these challenging days.
