"True Righteousness: Peace, Part 2" Matthew 6:25-34 Big Idea: The peace that surpasses all understanding comes when we make Jesus our true treasure. I. The Cause of Anxiety (vv. 25-30) A) It's important to connect today's reading with last weeks (vv. 19-24), about making Jesus and the things of God our true treasure. When we chase after the things of this world and place too much emphasis on them, then we often find ourselves distracted and anxious. But when we focus on God and His kingdom, then the way is paved for peace and joy B) It's important to note what Jesus is not saying here: 1. That we should never be concerned about the issues of life - There's a difference between concern and worry. The key here is an anxiety stemming from a lack of trust in God 2. That we shouldn't work hard - That misses Jesus's point. His emphasis is on the focus of our efforts, not that we make no effort (cf. Prov. 6:6-11) 3. That we don't plan for the future - The issue is worry about the future, not that we don't plan for it C) The need for the necessities of life is a concern for everyone, especially the poor. Jesus's promise is that God, who supplies the needs of even the birds and flowers, will care for us as well. This is an invitation to trust in God and rest in His provision II. The Cure for Anxiety (vv. 31-34) A) Anxiety is a serious concern for many today, especially youth. Jesus's invitation here is not about condemnation or effort, but about trust and priorities so that we can find a welcome relief in a world gone mad B) What Jesus is saying here: 1. God sees our needs and cares about them 2. God will meet our needs 3. We are of great value to God-He loves us 4. We are not the sum total of what we own C) What are we to do: 1. Focus on God and His kingdom and His glory 2. Trust in God's providential concern and care 3. Focus on the present 4. Pray (cf. Phil. 4:6-7)
